Laptop Upgrade

Sorry for the somewhat confusing last post. Google hasn’t crawled my new site in over a week and they crawl my blog almost daily, so I added a link with the hopes of them crawling my new content soon. If only I knew someone that worked on the search engine at Google…. :-)

Since starting the wedding directory company, I’ve been doing a lot of development on my home laptop and I was considering buying a new machine. But after comparing the Macbook pro to the possibility of upgrading my 3+ year old laptop, I realized that the upgrade was by far the best value. I’m actually very surprised at how cheap it is to freshen up a laptop. Here is how it breaks down:

My current 3+ year old Thinkpad T60 (top of the line at the time):
2.0 Ghz core duo (T2500)
1 GB RAM
667 MHZ front side bus
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 - 64 MB RAM (does 1440x900 native and 1920x1200 on my 24 inch widescreen - all that really matters to me)
100 GB 5400 RPM drive

Upgrades:
4 GB RAM - $64, ebay
320 GB 7200 RPM SATA top of the line western digital drive - $90, amazon
New 9 cell battery - ~$86, ebay
Win7 upgrade - Free, Microsoft
Total: $240

vs. Macbook pro:

2.4 Ghz core 2 duo
4 GB RAM
1067 MHZ FSB
320 GB SATA 7200 RPM drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT , 256MB (also does 1440x900 native and 1920x1200 on my 24 inch widescreen)
Total: $2224

So, obviously the Macbook is better, but the faster FSB, slightly faster processor, and better video card won’t really make much of a difference with the development I’m doing, and for a tenth the price, the upgrade is quite a deal. As for reliability, I think my Thinkpad has another 3 years left in it.
