Google: From Innovator to Follower

All great companies reach a point in their life cycle where they get too big to truly innovate and end up following and sometimes buying-up the nimble and hungry start-ups. I’ll leave why this occurs to another post, as that is an interesting topic in itself. What I would like to point out in this post is that Google has reached that point. With the announcement of Google Buzz, Google follows the nimble Facebooks and Twitters of the world into real time social networking. I find it ironic that this comes so quickly after the Google Wave announcement that seemed to prove to us that they could innovate and had not yet reached the fat-follower stage of the company lifecycle.
